WIU Physics Salutes Essay Winners, Superheros

MACOMB, IL - - The World Year of Physics, celebrating the 100th anniversary of EinsteinÂ’s "Miraculous Year" in which he published four papers that changed the face of physics forever, will be celebrated with two special events beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s Currens Hall 205.
WesternÂ’s physics department will honor the winners of an essay contest, which was open to students from areas schools, about the significance of EinsteinÂ’s work in our modern world.
Following the awards ceremony is the show, “Everybody Can Be a Superhero,” where Western Illinois physics faculty and students will perform amazing, incredible and super feats of strength, speed and agility, made possible through a simple understanding of the physical laws of the universe.
Audience members will shudder at the demonstration of super strength through mechanical advantage; flip over flying abilities by balancing lift and drag; watch the incredible freezing powers through liquid nitrogen; and witness the super amazing detection powers with the electromagnetic spectrum. A special demonstration of how to create a virtual reality will also be presented.
