MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University’s physics department will host a colloquium featuring Igor Shovkovy of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies on the “Quest for New States of Matter in Stars” at 4 p.m. Friday, March 10 in Currens Hall 205.

According to Shovkovy, the existence of neutron stars was predicted almost immediately after the discovery of the neutron. Thirty years later, neutron stars were finally discovered in observations. In the first part of his talk, Shovkovy will give a brief historical overview on neutron stars and present a short introduction to their properties.

In his presentation Shovkovy will argue “the density of matter in the center of neutron stars is so high that nuclei are likely crushed into quark matter.” He will also present an overview of current ideas about the properties of dense quark matter and the outlook of future research.

Shovkovy received his Ph.D. (1997) from the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is a leading expert in particle physics and astrophysics, in which his contributions to the understanding of the properties of extremely dense quark matter have attracted considerable attention.

This event is open free to the public. For more information, visit the physics website at www.wiu.edu/physics.
