MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will host a public presentation by nationally recognized feminist author Barbara Risman on “Gender Vertigo and Equality in Marriage” at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 30 in the University Union Nauvoo Room.

The presentation will feature RismanÂ’s current research on the importance of conceptualizing gender as a social structure, like politics or economics, rather than what is considered proper for each family or household role.

Risman is the head of the department of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and past-president of Sociologists for Women in Society. She has served as editor for journals such as Contemporary Sociology, Social Forces, Gender and Society and the Journal of Marriage and the Family. Her text “Gender Vertigo: American Families on Transition” has received several national recognitions.

This lecture is open free to the public and is sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council, the Western Organization for Women, WomenÂ’s Center, Provost Office and the womenÂ’s studies and sociology and anthropology departments.
