WIU to Host Conference for Math Teachers

MACOMB, IL – What do you get when you add together hundreds of area math teachers on the Western Illinois University campus in Macomb? The answer: an all-day conference on the teaching and learning of mathematics, to be held Thursday, March 30, in the University Union.
The 55th Annual Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) Western Regional Conference, with the theme of “Mathematics for All and All for Mathematics,” will focus on enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics at all grade levels, from kindergarten through college. The conference features more than 20 sessions on topics such as technology, literature and mathematics, standardized tests, mathematical games and activities and the mathematical education of teachers.
Featured speakers will be retired WIU mathematics professor Melfried Olson, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Jim Lewis, a leader in mathematics and math education.
Olson, currently a researcher at the University of Hawaii, taught at Western for 18 years. During his tenure at WIU, he created the Mathematics Education Resource Office (MERO), a learning center for pre-service and-in service teachers. He will speak on “Mathematics for All and All for Mathematics—Making it a Reality.”
Lewis teaches in the mathematics department and directs the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. An award-winning teacher and elected member of the university’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers, Lewis will deliver a talk titled “The Mathematical Education of Teachers: a National and Local View.”
