Islam-Christian Theology of Cross-Cultural Living October 5

MACOMB, IL - - Scott Alexander, associate professor of Islam at Catholic Theological Union (Chicago), will present Waging the Greater Jihad: Toward an Islam-Christian Theology of Cross-Cultural Living at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 in Western Illinois Universitys Currens Hall 203.
CTUs director of Catholic-Muslim Studies, Alexander has focused his professional efforts on the study of Islam within the context of his training as a historian of religions. His teaching and research interests include medieval Muslim sectarianism, the mystical traditions of Muslim spirituality, Qurantic studies and the history and future of Muslim-Christian relations and interfaith dialogue.
Alexanders presentation will look at both the Islamic notion of the spiritual struggle (jihad) and elements of contemporary Christian thinking. He will propose that both Muslims and Christians embrace the challenge to become cross-cultural warriors in this age of seemingly increasing narrow-mindedness and intolerance.
Alexander is a Harvard graduate, and he received his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is editor of Sisters: Women, Religion and Leadership in Christianity and Islam.
