MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University students and faculty recently participated in the 2007 American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI), a nonprofit management educational symposium, in Washington, D.C.

Western is one of only 75 universities in the U.S., and the first and only public university in Illinois, to become an academic partner with American Humanics, a national alliance and partnership between colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations. As an affiliate, Western offers an innovative course of study and certification that is available to all students regardless of major.

Undergraduate students enrolled in the American Humanics program become familiar with funding and marketing for nonprofit organizations, fundraising, human development and management along with lifelong leadership skills, said Dean Zoerink, recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) professor, who oversees the program. The RPTA department administers the program.

Those attending the 2007 management institute included Zoerink and Kathleen Martin, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Cameron (IL); Nate Nichols, a junior RPTA major from Kewanee (IL); Sarah Pinkston, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Macomb (IL); Celeste Polera, a senior psychology major from Plano (IL; and Nicole Robinson, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Arlington Heights (IL).

According to Zoerink, more than 580 American Humanics students and faculty, as well as more than 300 nonprofit and corporate leaders, took part in this unique opportunity to network, participate in simulated case studies and a national collegiate dialogue, and attend workshops led by local and national experts in nonprofit management.

"The purpose of the annual institute is to give junior and senior students experiences they will encounter as youth and human service agency professionals," Zoerink explained. "This unique educational symposium is considered the capstone professional development experience for students enrolled in the American Humanics nonprofit management program."
