Minority Internship Program Applications Being Accepted

MACOMB, IL -- Applications are currently being accepted for the Minority Internship Program (MIP), a one-semester, paid internship funded by an Illinois Board of Higher Education Higher Education Cooperation Act (HECA) grant.
The program allows fulltime junior, senior and graduate minority students to combine work and learning experiences. Western Illinois University is a member of a five university consortium to participate in the program. Abdul-Rasheed Na'Allah, African-American studies chair and Western's MIP coordinator, along with a committee of WIU faculty and administrators, manages the selection and appointment process for WIU students who qualify and participate in the program.
Internship applications for the Summer and Fall 2007 semesters are available in the African American Studies (AAS) office, Morgan Hall 232. Completed applications are due Monday,
March 19. Interested students who have questions about their qualifications should call
309/298-1181 or stopy by the AAS office. WIU-Quad Cities students should call for an application.
During the internship, participants have the opportunity to interact with decision-makers in their respective fields, develop personal interests and expand career opportunities while gaining academic credit. The program is designed specifically for African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American and Alaskan Native students who are U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Undergraduates must be at least a junior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Graduate students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
Internship sites are arranged by the student with the assistance of their academic adviser and/or the WIU Office of Career Services. Interns must work between 30-35 hours per week and attend monthly seminars. Academic credit for enrolling fulltime in an approved internship credit course is required during the internship semester. During Summer 2006, nearly 20 WIU students participated in the program and completed internships coast-to-coast and internationally.
"It is my hope that the financial support and mentoring available from the Minority Internship Program can make the internship experience that much more beneficial for our bright and talented students," added Na'Allah.
