MACOMB, IL - - The nine-member Western Illinois University ROTC Color Guard placed first overall of 11 teams participating in drill competition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign March 3.

This is the first time Western Illinois has earned the top honor in the Pershing Rifles Invitational Drill Meet in WIU's ROTC 38-year history, according to Master Sgt. Levi Carcamo, who had previously coached the team to third and fourth place finished in the past seven years.

Color Guard cadets practice 90-minutes once a week throughout the school year to be prepared to present the colors at home football and basketball games as well as other official University events. Since Jan. 29, when the cadets had registered for the competition, they had been holding three practice sessions per week.

Competition included individual inspections, in which Western placed first; and competition in basic drill moves in unison, in which Western placed second. The WIU Bulldog Battalion's overall score was high enough for the team title.
