MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University students majoring in hospitality in the department of dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality (DFMH) will have additional educational opportunities thanks to the generosity of two local restaurant owners.

Roger and Lisa Ward, owners of Magnolias Restaurant and Catering in Macomb, recently established the Magnolias Restaurant and Catering Scholarship, which will award $1,000 annually to a WIU student studying hotel/restaurant management. The application deadline for the Magnolias Scholarship is Sunday, April 1. A recipient will be selected by May 1.

"I was recently asked by (DFMH associate professor) Cheryl Boston to be a member of the department's advisory board; and after spending some time on campus with the students and faculty, I was quite impressed with this department and its students," Lisa Ward said. "It is my hope that the Magnolias Scholarship helps students who juggle their class and work schedules as I did."

In addition to the Magnolias Scholarship, the Wards will also give $250 each year to the DFMH department to help defray expenses for hospitality students to attend the annual hotel/restaurant show in Chicago.

"Lisa's and Roger's support of Western over the years has been exceptional," said Brad Bainter, assistant director of development. "We are most appreciative of their commitment to WIU and the Macomb community."
