Vrasidas Receives Inaugural COEHS Distinguished Alumni Award

MACOMB, IL -- A Western Illinois University instructional technology and telecommunication graduate has been named the first recipient of the WIU College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) Distinguished Alumni Award.

Charalambos "Pambos" Vrasidas (VRAH-see-DAS), who received his bachelor's degree (1994) and a master's degree in education (1995) from Western, is the founder and executive director of CARDET – Centre for the Advancement of Research and Development in Educational Technology, a nonprofit international organization based in Cyprus. He is also an associate professor of learning technologies at Intercollege in Cyprus and is the editor-in-chief in Educational Media International Journal.

Vrasidas will be recognized at the WIU-Macomb campus April 5. He will present "Global Perspectives on e-Learning: Challenges and Possibilities" from 2-3 p.m. and from 4-5 p.m. in Stipes Hall 121. The presentations are open free to the public.

"Dr. Vrasidas' came to our college on a Fulbright Scholarship as a third grade teacher in Cyprus. We have been pleased to track his many accomplishments since his graduation from Western," said COEHS Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps. "We are honored that he will share his knowledge and global experiences with our University and we are proud to recognize him with the inaugural COEHS Distinguished Alumni Award."

Through CARDET, Vrasidas has worked on more than 15 research and development grants during the last five years, which have received more than 10 million Euro. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and received best paper awards at numerous professional conferences. Vrasidas has also published five books and more than 60 articles in professional journals, and presented papers at more than 100 conferences worldwide.

He has participated in committees and numerous non-governmental organizations in Europe, Asia and Cyprus, and has completed work in community programs and teacher education in Asia. He has also led peace-education efforts and school programs in Cyprus.

Vrasidas received his doctorate in curriculum and instruction (educational media and computers) from Arizona State University in Tempe.
