WIU Summer Camps in Art, Math, Filmmaking

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University has planned three exciting academic summer camps in June and July for junior high and high school students. Camp options include Art for Gifted and Talented Students, Adventures in Filmmaking and Girls Plus Math.
Two sessions of the art camp, which run Sunday-Saturday, will be open for residential and commuter students. The filmmaking (Sunday-Saturday) and math (Sunday-Friday) camps are residential only. All campers will be supervised by faculty and specially trained residential counselors. Brief descriptions of the camps and registration fees – which include tuition, supplies, activities, lodging and meals – are listed below.
The camps are sponsored by Western's Office of Non-Credit Programs, University Television and the art and math departments. Admission to the summer camps is on a first-come first-served basis and is expected to fill quickly. - Art for Gifted and Talented Students (residential fee $425; commuter fee $375) – Students who have completed fourth, fifth and sixth grade can participate in the June 17-22 camp. Admission into the June 24-29 camp is for students who have completed the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The camp offers study in drawing and painting, airbrush, computer art and various forms of three-dimensional expression for students who are in the gifted program at their school or who show a marked ability in art. These sessions have limited enrollment.
- Adventures in Filmmaking (residential fee $499) – The July 8-14 camp is for high school students who have completed the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades. The camp is designed to give students a hands-on introduction into the pre-production, production and post-production process of making a narrative short film. Students will develop a dramatic story with script breakdown, cast, lighting, shooting and editing. Each student will receive a copy of the final cut at the end of camp. Registered students will have a special pre-program opportunity to discuss filmmaking, enhance their skills and interact with the instructor and other participants online. Registration is limited.
- Girls Plus Math (residential fee $449) – The July 15-20 camp is for girls ages 11-14. The camp, with limited enrollment, is designed to promote interest in mathematics, willingness to take risks, self-confidence and the motivation needed for effective problem-solving. Girls will have the opportunity to work with Western's laboratories, computer facilities and technological resources.
Professional women are scheduled to present at the camp to show participants how they use math in their careers. Western Illinois' College of Arts and Sciences Dean Inessa Levi is a mathematician, who has written more than 60 articles in algebra, semigroup theory and applications which have been published in scientific journals. She earned her master's degree (1982) and doctorate (1985) in mathematics at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
