MACOMB, IL -- Old tennies have been given new life and smell sweet once again.

The children at Western Illinois University's Infant and Preschool Center have learned that almost anything can be recycled, including tennis shoes. According to Center Director Ann Curtis, at the center's year-end Family Night, families of children attending the center were asked to bring old shoes for a project dubbed the "shoe garden."

"We filled the shoes with potting soil and a flower and hung them along the playground fence," Curtis said. "The children are responsible for watering the flowers and taking care of the plants."

In addition to the shoe garden, a variety of other annuals were planted around the playground for children to enjoy all summer long. For the first time in its 30-year history, the WIU Infant and Preschool Center will be open during Western's summer session,
June 4 through July 27.

For more information on the center or to register for summer session childcare, call Curtis at 309/298-1250.
