Main Named WIU Counselor Education Chair

MOLINE, IL -- Frank Main, chair of the division of counseling and psychology om education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, has been named the new chair of Western Illinois University's counselor education department, effective July 1, according to College of Education and Human Services Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps.

Main joined the University of South Dakota faculty in 1978 and was appointed chair in 1990. He is the author of two books and numerous articles and book chapters which focus on family therapy and family therapy supervision in counselor education. He is the author of the popular book on families, "Perfect Parenting and Other Myths" and is working on a manuscript for couples, "Marital Myths and Marital Realities." Main is also the director and founder of the Counseling and Family Therapy Center at the University of South Dakota.

"We are pleased that Dr. Main is joining the College of Education and Human Services. His experience in leading accredited master's and doctoral programs, combined with his impressive record of scholarship and outreach, made him a excellent choice to lead Western's highly regarded counselor education department," Smith-Skripps said. "He will contribute significantly to the Quad Cities-based department and to the college's presence in the region."

Main is a nationally recognized speaker and lecturer and continues to deliver master demonstrations of his therapeutic approach to national and international audiences.
He received the 2006 North American Society of Adlerian Psychology Lifetime Achievement Award and is a clinical member and Approved Supervisor for the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Main is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT).

He received his Ed.D. in counselor education from Idaho State University (1976) and his master's degree in rehabilitation counseling/psychology from the University of Iowa (1968). He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Yankton College, SD (1966). Main served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968-71, and reached the rank of captain.
