MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University department of educational leadership recently awarded the John D. and Mary Denise Ranger Scholarship, the Norman L. and Eileen A. Krong Outstanding Student Award and the Arnold W. Salisbury Educational Leadership Award.

The 2007 Ranger Scholarship was awarded to Tiffany Springer, a graduate student in the educational leadership master's degree program. Springer has served as an English teacher at Lombard Middle School in Galesburg (IL) since 2005. She also serves as assistant track coach, seventh grade team department chair and student council adviser. Prior to teaching at Lombard she was a fifth grade teacher in Galesburg and an English teacher in the ROWVA School District. Springer's teaching has been rated as "exemplary" by her supervisors and she is characterized as dedicated, hardworking and enthusiastic.

Julie Delaney received the Norman L. and Eileen Krong Outstanding Student Award, which recognizes a master's degree graduate from the educational leadership program at Western who has great potential as a future school administrator. Delaney received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Iowa (1983) and her master's degree in educational leadership from WIU (2006). She began her professional teaching career as a language arts teacher at Aquinas West Middle School in Fort Madison, IA in 1983. Since 1990, Delaney has been a seventh and eighth grade science and religion teacher at St. Paul the Apostle School in Davenport, IA. She has been named associate principal of St. Paul, effective Fall 2007.

The Arnold W. Salisbury Educational Leadership Award was presented to Robert Gillum, superintendent of Sherrard Community Unit School District No. 200. The Salisbury Award is designed to recognize graduates of Western's education specialist program who have had positive impact on Pre-K-12 education in Illinois. Gillum has served the Sherrard district as superintendent since June 2000. Under his leadership, the district has completed and implemented a strategic planning initiative that has allowed the district to continue to meet the needs of all students. The district received the "National Magna Award" in Spring 2005 from the National School Board Association in recognition of the district's implementation of a strategic plan.

Gillum is a member of the American Association of School Administrators Governing Board of Directors and the Illinois Association of School Administrators Board of Directors, for which he is president-elect. He began his professional career teaching fourth grade and coaching in the Cardinal Community School District in Eldon, IA. Gillum also taught in the Lisbon and West Liberty school districts before moving to the Central Clinton School District in DeWitt, IA, where he served as principal for 13 years before assuming the superintendent role. He has also served as the superintendent of the Durand School District.

He received his master's degree from the University of Iowa (1982) and his education specialist degree from Western (1997).
