MACOMB, IL - - Mark Wallace, a leading national spokesperson for the "Green Christianity" movement, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in the University Union Heritage Rooms at Western Illinois University. His lecture, "The New Green Christianity: Why Biblical Religion is Vital to Saving the Earth," is part of the University Theme "Global Challenges and Personal Responsibility – Environmental Sustainability" 2007-2008 Speaker Series. It is open free to the public.

A religion professor at Swarthmore College, Wallace will address how, across the political spectrum, Christians care for creation has become a core moral issue for biblically centered believers concerned about climate change and the loss of global bio-diversity.

He will also lead the roundtable discussion, "The Green Campus: Models of Sustainability in Higher Education Today," from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in Stipes Hall 501. The discussion will be based on an environmental studies capstone course he taught in Spring 2007 that culminated in students presenting a campus sustainability plan to Swarthmore College. Information on that proposal is at www.swarthmore.edu/x11741.xml.

Wallace has authored several books that reflect on the theological and spiritual dimensions of creation and ecology. His most recent book, "Finding God in the Singing River: Christianity, Spirit and Nature," (2005) draws on biblical images that foster an ecological sensibility, a "green spirituality."

The College of Arts and Sciences and the philosophy and religious studies department are co-sponsors of Wallace's visit.
