WIU Hosts Fall Journalism Day Nov. 2

MACOMB, IL - - Who should decide what topics can be covered in high school papers? Linda Jones, who earned her Master of Science in Journalism at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, will answer this question and more as the featured speaker at Western Illinois University's annual Fall Journalism Day Friday,
Nov. 2.
Journalism Day, hosted by Western's Society of Professional Journalists and the English and journalism department, is open to area high school students. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the University Union. Beginning at 9:40 a.m., WIU faculty members will present a variety of workshops, including photography, interviewing and editing.
At 10:45 a.m., Jones, chair of the communication department and an associate professor of journalism at Roosevelt University (Chicago), will address the lack of understanding that college students have about their constitutional rights; and, as a result, the lack of student control over what can be covered in their school newspaper. She will argue student control and inevitable mistakes in judgment are necessary steps in the developmental process for students to become good citizens. There will be an opportunity for questions.
A free lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. Tours of Western's student newspaper, the Western Courier, and broadcast news facilities in Sallee Hall will be given from 12:15-12:45 p.m.
