Board to Consider New Degree Programs

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees will consider two new degree program at the Friday, Dec. 14 Board meeting in the University Union Capitol Rooms.

The WIU Board will begin at 8 a.m. with a scheduled executive session in accordance with the provisions of the Open Meetings Act. The open meeting will resume at approximately
9 a.m., following the executive session.

A Master of Arts in Museum Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology will be presented to Western's Board for consideration.

The proposed museum studies degree is designed to educate students in the history of museums and the aspects of museum work, including administration, collections management, exhibition development, community development and education, tourism and fundraising. The program will be comprised of coursework offered through the art and recreation, parks and tourism administration departments, in conjuction with museum professionals at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA. The degree program will serve nontraditional graduate students, as well as traditional graduate students with bachelor's degrees in related programs, on the WIU-Quad Cities campus.

The proposed anthropology degree has been created to provide students with the understanding and skills related to human behavior, diversity and social problems through the combination of human biology, cultural analysis, linguistics and the study of past societies. The degree program will serve students on the Macomb campus.

The Board will also receive an update of the University's 2008 master plan. Other items on the Board's agenda include reports on athletics, underrepresented groups and the First Year Experience. In addition, the Board will recognize recently retired Assistant Vice President of University Relations John Maguire for his 30-plus years of service to Western.
