MACOMB, IL -- According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is not just a man's disease. Heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are devastating to women too. In fact, coronary heart disease, which causes heart attacks, is the leading cause of death for American women.

To raise awareness, Western Illinois University's department of dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality (DFMH), along with WIU Campus Recreation, will host the 12-week lifestyle change program, "Heart Smart for Women," for WIU employees and students beginning Monday, Feb. 4. The programs, which will meet from noon-1:15 p.m. Mondays in either the Knoblauch Hall Corporate Dining Room 239 or the Spencer Student Recreation Center Keeney Room, will run through April 28. The Feb. 4 session will be held in Knoblauch Hall.

Participants will discover ways to overcome barriers to physical activity and healthy eating; set goals to incorporate physical activity and healthy eating into a busy lifestyle; and learn stress management strategies. In addition, health screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose (finger stick), cholesterol and bone density will be offered. Pedometers will be given to each participant and door prizes will also be awarded.

Class size is limited. To register, send your name and contact information, along with the $10 fee, to Campus Recreation.

The program is funded by an Illinois General Revenue grant through the Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Women's Health. Co-sponsors include Western's Beu Health Center and The Cooper Institute.

For more information, contact Lorri Kanauss, DFMH assistant professor and director of Western's Bella Hearst Diabetes Institute, at 309/298-1049, or Campus Recreation at 309/298-1228.
