57th Annual WIU Mathematics Teachers Conference March 28

MACOMB, IL - - "Beatuy, Rigor and Connections in Mathematics" is the theme for the 57th annual Western Illinois University Mathematics Teachers Conference scheduled for Friday, March 28 on the WIU-Macomb campus.
The event, co-sponsored by the departments of mathematics and curriculum and instruction, is open to math educators, students and anyone interested in learning more about teaching mathematics.
The conference will begin with registration at 8 a.m. March 28 in the west wing of Morgan Hall. A welcome and keynote address by Rutgers computer science Professor Bahman Kalantari will start the conference from 8:30-9:25 a.m. in Morgan Hall 109. From 9:40-11:45 a.m. and from 2-2:55 p.m., 25-minute general sessions for teachers of grades 0-4, 5-8, 9-11 and 12-14 will be held in Horrabin Hall. The closing session with speaker Susan Gerofsky, assistant professor of curriculum studies at University of British Columbia, will begin at 3:05 p.m. in Morgan Hall 109, with a reception following at 4 p.m. in Morgan Hall 209.
Kalantari will speak on Polynomiography, a software program that creates art through the approximation of polynomial roots.
Gerofsky, who has taught mathematics, applied linguistics and film classes and has conducted interdisciplinary research, will address the use of writing and performance strategies from the arts, media, music and theatre to help students learn larger concepts in math.
Both speakers will conduct workshops during the lunch break. Kalantari's workshop on Polynomiography will be held from 12:15-1:05 p.m., and Gerofsky's workshop on Truncated Icosahedrons CD Sculpture is scheduled for 1:05-1:55 p.m.
