MACOMB, IL -- NASA podcasting, technology for preschoolers, robots, virtual reality, online social networks and the list goes on at the ninth annual Tech Fest at Western Illinois University Wednesday, March 26.

Sponsored by Western's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) and Citizens National Bank of Macomb, numerous exhibitors will display their technology wares from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Horrabin Hall gymnasium. Representatives from COEHS departments; programs from the colleges of fine arts and communication, arts and sciences, and business and technology; Alumni Programs; User Support Services; University Libraries; Macomb Senior High School East Project; Citizens National Bank; McArthur Early Childhood Center students; and Edison School sixth graders will share how technology is being used in their classrooms and respective fields.

"Tech Fest is an excellent way to illustrate how technology connects the University and the community," said COEHS Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps. "The event provides an opportunity for the University's departments and community organizations to showcase the latest in technology, such as podcasting and Second Life virtual reality. It also demonstrates the partnerships Western has with area schools and community businesses."

A sample of the presentations include: "An Overview – and Tour -- of Second Life," "Podcast Producer," "Using Technology to Reach Rural Libraries," "Using Technology to Enhance Behavior Management," "One Laptop Per Child," "NASA Podcasting," and "Livescan (Robotics) in the Workplace."

Tech Fest is open free to the public, and lunch is provided courtesy of the department of educational leadership at WIU. A reception featuring Macomb Mayor Mick Wisslead and a video welcome by WIU President Al Goldfarb will begin at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium. Door prizes will be given away during the reception. Participants must be present to win.
