Sport Management Program at WIU Celebrates 35 Years

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University sport management alumni are invited back to the WIU-Macomb campus April 11-12 to celebrate the program's 35th anniversary.

The sport management graduate degree program, housed in the department of kinesiology, was established at Western in 1972 and is one of the oldest sport management programs in the United States.

According to Program Coordinator Darlene Young, the degree leads to a wide variety of career choices. Sport management graduates often work in school, university and college settings as athletic administrators, public relations/marketing directors and in professional and amateur sports areas.

Current students, friends and graduates will take part in the anniversary celebration, which begins Friday, April 11 with a 1 p.m. golf outing at the WIU Harry Mussatto Golf Course, followed by a 6:30 p.m. dinner and silent auction at the former Chandler's restaurant, 127 E. Carroll St.

On Saturday, April 12, a barbeque will be held at noon at the Alfred Boyer Baseball Field. Participants will receives a pass to attend either the baseball or softball doubleheaders, the Lee Calhoun Relays or a tennis match.

In addition to the alumni weekend to celebrate the program's 35th anniversary, 1991 alumnus Steve LaCroix, vice president of marketing for the Minnesota Vikings, will present two sessions Monday , April 21 (10-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3 p.m.) in Horrabin Hall 78.

Rooms for the alumni weekend celebration have been reserved at the Days Inn in Macomb (309/833-5511). Reservations must be made prior to Tuesday, March 25.
