WIU Summer Youth Camps in Art and Math

MACOMB, IL - - There is still time to register that promising artist or math student into an exciting and challenging five-day summer camp at Western Illinois University.

Two "Art for Gifted and Talented Students" camps are scheduled. The Sunday-Friday, June 15-20 camp is for students who have completed fourth, fifth and sixth grade. A second camp, Sunday-Friday, June 22-27, is for students who have completed the sixth, seventh or eighth grades. Both camps offer study in drawing, painting, airbush, computer art and various forms of three-dimensional expression for students who are in the gifted program at their school or who show a marked ability in art. The residential fee, $425, includes tuition, art and computer supplies, all extra-curricular activities, lodging and meals. Commuter students who live within 30 miles of Western are charged $375, which includes the noon meal.

Western's "Girls Plus Math" camp for girls ages 11-13 will be held Sunday-Friday, July 20-25. The camp is designed to promote interest in mathematics, willingness to take risks in analysis, self-confidence and the motivation needed for effective problem-
solving. Girls will have the opportunity to work in Western's laboratories, computer facilities and with technological resources. Professional women will visit to explain how they became interested in math and use math in their careers. Enrollment is limited to 24 participants. The residential fee is $449 and includes tuition, class¬room supplies, extracurricular activities and room and board.

The camps are sponsored by Western's Office of Non-Credit Programs and the art and mathematics departments. Admission to the summer camps is on a first-come, first served basis and is expected to fill quickly.
