MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's biology department will host the 27th Annual Biology Day event, which gives high school students the opportunity to explore biology at the college level, from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 in Waggoner Hall.

The Biology Day program is packed with a variety of activities for high school students, including two academic competitions: the Biology Bowl and the hall competitions. Students will have a choice of seminars, with five 25-minute presentations from 9-11:30 a.m. by Western's biology faculty and students on a wide variety of topics, and the opportunity to sit in a college freshman-level biology lecture.

The Biology Bowl competition invites schools to organize teams of four students to compete with teams from other schools by using their knowledge of biology. Contests will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the playoffs scheduled for 1 p.m. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams. The rules for this competition are available online at the Web address listed below.

The hall competition, for all students, is an independent learning activity. Students walk through the hallways of Waggoner Hall to examine display cases and answer questions dealing with the displays. Students who get the most answers right will be given a medal.

The Biology Day program will start with registration at 8 a.m. The registration deadline for high schools is Monday, Oct. 20. Registration forms and additional information regarding this event is available online at wiu.edu/biology/ScienceTeaching/BiologyDay.
