MACOMB, IL -- If you're looking for the latest and greatest children's and young-adult literature titles -- books that will get students and children excited about reading -- then look no further than Western Illinois University's Children's Literature Examination Center (CLEC). Located on Western's Macomb campus, CLEC will hold an open house from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, April 23 and from 8 a.m.-12 noon Friday, April 24 at CLEC in Horrabin Hall 1.

The center's 3,000-plus book collection of recently published books -- which includes most of the recent American Library Association award winners -- will be available for review at the open house. The collection includes literature in a range of genres, including fiction, nonfiction, traditional literature, picture books and poetry from most of the major publishers of books for children and young adults. The collection is non-circulating but is open year-round to anyone interested in seeing what's new in children and young-adult literature.

According to CLEC, the open house will also feature the Lois and Lowell Lueck Collection, which showcases books selected based on established criteria for excellence in literature and writing. Lowell Lueck, a former director of institutional research and planning at Western, retired in 1993. Along with his wife, Lois, a former high school guidance counselor, Lowell established an endowment through Western's Foundation in memory of Ardeth and Leonard Grove to promote new ideas and methods for the improvement and teaching of reading in the western Illinois region.

The open house is open free to the public. Participants attending on Thursday afternoon can park in the lot south of Horrabin Hall between 2–6 p.m. (across from the Leslie F. Malpass Library) without parking permits. For Friday's open house, participants should pick up visitor parking permits at Mowbray Hall on Western's Macomb campus. Contact Mowbray Hall at (309) 298-1921.

Registration is not required, and refreshments will be served. For more information, contact WIU's curriculum and instruction department at (309) 298-1961. Visit CLEC
