Elkin-Larkin Award Presented

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University sophomore Brieanna Korba (Collinsville,IL) was named the recipient of the 2008-2009 Elkin-Larkin Award as an outstanding student in the general orientation program.
Korba received the award based on her outstanding academic record and University involvement. She will receive a $200 award, and her name will be inscribed on a permanent plaque in the University Advising and Academic Support Center (UAASC).
The award is given in honor of the late Robert Elkin and the late Jeanne Larkin, former staff members of the UAASC.
The UAASC general orientation (GO) program allows students who enter the University without a major to explore different fields of study prior to declaring a major in a specific discipline. Academic advisers work closely with GO students, helping them identify their interests, values and abilities. Typically 20-30 percent of all freshmen enter through general orientation. Students may remain in general orientation until they have completed 45 semester hours, half way through the sophomore year, when they must declare a major.
Korba recently declared biology with an option in medical science as her major and psychology her minor.
