MACOMB, IL -- Learn about sustainable gardens and view a variety of sustainable landscapes at various stages of growth at the Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens Tour Benefit for Western Illinois University's Horn Field Campus (HFC). The tour is scheduled from 9 a.m.–noon Saturday, July 18 at Horn Field Campus and at six gardeners' homes in Macomb.

According to Mindy Pheiffer, Horn Field Campus program coordinator, the fundraising event will help raise awareness about what Western's Horn Field Campus offers individuals and communities in western Illinois; provide a sustainable educational experience for the community; and raise funds to continue environmental education and leadership programs for youth and sustainable landscaping projects at Horn Field Campus.

"Sustainable gardens and landscapes are important because they help prevent wind and water erosion, promote native grasses and wildflowers and help decrease landscape maintenance, labor and expenses," Pheiffer explained.

On this year's tour, local artists will also showcase their artwork at each garden tour stop. The 2009 Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens Tour stops, with confirmed local artists displaying their artwork, include:
