MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's kinesiology department has a new interim chair. Loran Erdmann -- who started at Western in 1994 as an assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 2003 -- assumed the interim chair position of the department on July 1. Former kinesiology department chair Miriam Satern stepped down and has resumed her position as a full-time faculty member in the department.

"Dr. Erdmann's appointment ensures a seamless and supportive transition of leadership to the department," said College of Education and Human Services Interim Dean Nick DiGrino. "His experience will allow him to effectively lead the kinesiology department and continue its established commitment to excellence."

Prior to coming to Western, Erdmann served in adjunct professor positions at Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa and as director of the department of wellness services at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA. Erdmann also has experience as a middle and high school teacher and coach (West Point, NE) and as an intramural sports director at Rochester Community College in Rochester, MN.

Erdmann has published numerous articles in such scholarly and academic publications as the "International Journal of Sport Nutrition," "Perceptual and Motor Skills," "Journal of Strength & Condition Research" and "Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise."

Erdmann holds professional certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine as a certified health fitness director and health fitness specialist and from the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is a also member of several health- and fitness-related and educational professional organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine; the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Erdmann currently serves as the research coordinator for the Macomb Children's Health-Related Physical Fitness Project, a longitudinal surveillance study (1988-2005) that collected data about health-related fitness in elementary-aged children in Macomb Community Unit School District #185. Along with project director Cathy McMillan, assistant professor, and other faculty and students in Western's kinesiology department, Erdmann is working on research manuscripts to publish and publicize the data gathered in the study.

Erdmann received his bachelor's degree in physical education and health, his master's degree in physical education and his doctoral degree in educational administration from the University of Northern Iowa.
