"Cultural Workers" Add Classroom Presentations; Other Programs Oct. 6-7

MACOMB, IL - - Anne Feeney and David Rovics, activist folksingers who call themselves 'cultural workers,' are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Western Illinois University's COFAC Recital Hall, located in Simpkins Hall.

They are on their fall tour of the Midwest called "Union Makes Us Strong." Other scheduled appearances Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 6-7 at Western include:

Tuesday, Oct. 6
5-5:30 p.m. "Starving Artist - -Inevitable or Avoidable? Must we suffer for our art?" Feeney and Rovics talk candidly about their personal struggles for economic survival in a corporate world while generating pointedly anti-corporate work. Women's Center Lounge, Multicultural Center. Sponsored by the Feminist Action Alliance Meeting.

7:30 p.m. "Unions Make Us Strong" tour, COFAC Recital Hall, free admission.

Wednesday, Oct. 7
10 a.m. The guest 'cultural workers' will join Illinois Green Party candidate for governor, Rich Whitney, who will speak and answer questions in the University Union Sandberg Theatre. A magna cum laude graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Law, Whitney practices in the areas of employment law, civil rights and criminal defense. He is one of the founding members of the Illinois Green Party; and he has been politically active in support of the labor, environmental, civil rights, women's and antiwar movements. Whitney will discuss current events, including the upcoming election. This event, which is open free to the public, is sponsored by Western Illinois University's Campus Greens.

11 a.m. "Copyright in a Deconstructed Recording Age: Cultural Workers Feeney and Rovics Discuss" for Assistant Professor Lisa Barr's Journalism 417, "Mass Media Law" class, University Union Lincoln Room. Free admission.

12 p.m.
"Women and Children First: Why and how are women and children peculiarly disadvantaged by corporate globalization? What are they doing about it?" for REAL Women: Women as Researchers, Educators, Activists and Leaders Brown Bag. Multicultural Center Activity Room. Free admission.

1- 2:50 p.m. "Contemporary Peace Workers: A Spark of Hope in Today's Society" for Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies Safoura Boukari's AAS/WS 336 "Womanist/Feminist Theory: Global Perspectives" class and AAS281 "Literature of the Black World" class. Morgan Hall 310. Free admission.

9:30 p.m. Unsponsored Afterglow at The Café, 8 West Side Square, downtown Macomb, to benefit WIU Campus Greens – 21 years old and older.
