MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest freshman academic honorary in the nation, conducted its 2009 induction ceremony Oct. 3 during Western's Family Weekend.

To be eligible, students must have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 GPA equals an A scale) in a program leading to a bachelor's degree during their freshmen semesters. Phi Eta Sigma encourages continued high academic achievement and service. Students who are active members are able to qualify for leadership roles, invitations to the national conference and more than 1,000 national annual scholarships that range from $1,000 to $10,000, said William Knox, chapter advisor and master of ceremonies.

Approximately 50 inductees participated in the ceremony, as did the Phi Eta Sigma student executive board officers: President Brian Demijan (Burlington, IA) a senior accounting major; Secretary Calli Vonk (Chillicothe, IL), a junior special education major; Treasurer Ken Jenke (Downers Grove, IL), a senior accounting major, and senior adviser Michael Kwiatkowski (Mundelein, IL), a law enforcement and justice administration major. Junior art major Kristyn Lepek (Elmwood Park, IL) stood in for Vice President Secalee Kruse (West Point, IA), senior psychology major, who was unable to attend the ceremony. Also attending the ceremony were 130 relatives and friends of the inductees.

Barry Witten, a professor in curriculum and instruction and a Phi Eta Sigma member, gave the keynote address, "Meeting Challenges in a Changing World."

Honorary faculty members inducted into Phi Eta Sigma include Glenn Haynes, economics instructor; Christopher Pynes, associate professor of philosophy; and David Zanolla, communication instructor.
