Artist Emory Douglas to Give Dec. 3 Lecture at WIU

MACOMB, IL - - Revolutionary artist Emory Douglas will present a guest lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 in Western Illinois University's Union Sandburg Theatre. His speech, "Emory Douglas - Revolutionary Artist: Black Panther Party Politics and Concern for the Community by Design," is open free to the public.
Douglas' presentation, which complements Western's 2009-2010 University theme "Personal Finance and World Poverty," will cover the role poverty played in the development of social protest movements such as the Black Panther Party for Self Defense of the late 1960s. Through his art, Douglas became the visual identity for the party. His posters, cartoons and illustrations for the Black Panther newspaper demonstrated the party's message of protest and empowerment within a community troubled by poverty and police oppression.
Douglas continues to create posters about issues such as children's health and advancing global AIDs awareness. He will also speak about how art can raise awareness about poverty and other challenges in the world. Douglas' art has gained international attention, and has been displayed in various museums and art festivals.
In addition to the lecture, Douglas will conduct a master class on political art with interested students Friday, Dec. 4.
His appearance is co-sponsored by the departments of art and African American studies; the African American Studies Department Club; the University Theme Committee; and the Provost's Office.
