MACOMB, IL - - Does your child need a boost in reading or writing?

Western Illinois University Curriculum and Instruction Professor Sara Simonson's graduate reading program students will offer free diagnostic services at the WIU-Macomb campus beginning Tuesday, Feb. 2 for students in grades 7-12. The weekly sessions, which will be held from 5:15–6:30 p.m., will include intensive instruction. Sessions will run through May 11.

"This program is aimed at building independent lifelong learners while providing our graduate reading students – who are certified experienced teachers working on their master's degrees – with further practical experience," Simonson said. "The program will be tailored to meet the needs of each middle and high school participant and will provide one-on-one tutoring."

Because the graduate students are dependent on the children's attendance to complete course requirements, it's essential that those who sign up for these services attend the sessions on a regular basis, Simonson added.

"The tutors will assess each student to determine their strengths and needs in reading and writing, and over the course of the sessions they will guide the instruction to enhance the student's reading and writing skills," she said.

Enrollment is limited to 10 students. To reserve a spot or for more information, contact Simonson at (309) 298-2510 or SD-Simonson@wiu.edu.
