Western Courier Staff Garners 10 Awards from ICPA

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Courier, the student-run newspaper at Western Illinois University, was honored with 10 awards at the Illinois College Press Association's annual convention in Chicago on February 19-20.

"We're extremely pleased and honored to have been recognized by ICPA," said Ed Komenda, editor in chief of the Western Courier. "It was particularly gratifying because we competed against much larger daily college papers."

Courier staff members earning ICPA awards included:

  • First Place – Best News Story: Rob Amaefule (Bachelor of Arts 2009, journalism, Chicago) and Sarah Zeeck (senior, English major, Rushville, IL)
  • First Place – Best Sports Feature: Ken Woods (Bachelor of Arts 2009, journalism, Broadview, IL)
  • Second Place – Best Feature: Ed Komenda (junior, English major, Chicago)
  • Third Place – Best Headline Writing: Ken Woods
  • Honorable Mention – Best Editorial Cartoon: Skyler Patridge (Bachelor of Arts 2009, art, Table Grove, IL)
  • Honorable Mention – Best Non-Film Critical Review: Patrick Haynes (junior, journalism major, Palatine, IL)
  • Honorable Mention – Best Sports Column: Ken Woods
  • Honorable Mention – Best Sports Page Design: Bill Welt (senior, history major, Springfield, IL) and Kendra Nayden (senior, graphic communication major, Canton, IL)
  • Honorable Mention – Best In-Depth Reporting: Ed Komenda
  • Honorable Mention – Best Sports Photography: Adam Sacasa (Bachelor of Arts 2009, journalism, Macomb, IL)


The ICPA membership includes 39 college and university papers in Illinois. ICPA awards were judged by a panel of professional newspaper journalists from papers throughout the state.
