Alum to Address Role of Intercollegiate Athletics Fundraising in March 4 Session

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University alumnus Scott Brown will present "The Increasingly Important Role of Fundraising in Intercollegiate Athletics" at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4 in Horrabin Hall 1 on WIU's Macomb campus.
Brown earned his master's degree in sport management from WIU in 2005. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports administration and political science from Simpson College (Indianola, IA). He currently serves as the assistant director of development for the University of Iowa Foundation, where he is responsible for the annual fund solicitations that generate an average of $13.5 million. He also manages the major gifts portfolio and assisted in the development of a premium-seating marketing strategy and arena-reseating plan for the Carver Hawkeye Arena Enhancement Campaign.
Prior to his position in the University of Iowa's foundation office, Brown was the director of premium seating and stadium club operations for University of Iowa's intercollegiate athletics department. In this role, he directed the sales of premium seating, the solicitation of seat licenses and assisted in the planning and executing of the Kinnick Stadium rededication and dedication of the Brechler Press Box. He is a currently a member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors.
According to Darlene Young, sport management graduate coordinator and internship coordinator and associate professor in Western's kinesiology department, Brown will focus his presentation on the role that development has with Division I NCAA athletics.
"Students who attend Scott's presentation will learn about the role of a development officer," Young said. "One major issue that athletics departments frequently have to address is stadium or arena-seating arrangements, which change due to renovations or the construction of a new building. Scott will discuss how seats are distributed based on donor amounts," she added.
