Plan a Spring Full of Nature, Wellness and Fun at Horn Field Campus, WIU's 92-Acre Retreat

MACOMB, IL -- Get into the spirit of spring a bit early this year and start planning your Horn Field Campus activities slated for April and May. Horn Field Campus, a unit of Western Illinois University's College of Education and Human Services and administered by the recreation, park and tourism administration department, is located one mile south of Macomb. The 92-acre campus provides Western students, faculty and staff, as well as citizens of Macomb and surrounding communities, with a rustic and relaxed retreat with woodlands, prairie and several miles of nature trails. In addition, HFC features a 40-foot Climbing Tower and a Challenge Course, which includes a high ropes component.

"The beautiful, peaceful setting is ideal for getting back to nature, recreation, study and reflection or just relaxing," said Mindy Pheiffer, HFC program coordinator. "HFC also sponsors a wide variety of educational and service programs and offers opportunities for recreation, public service, instruction and research."

During Spring 2010, some of HFC's events include:

Wellness Weekend
8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, April 10 and 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday April 11
This weekend wellness retreat will include guided meditation, yoga, labyrinth walks and educational sessions covering such topics as "Edible and Medicinal Plants." Cost is $25, which will cover meals and optional accommodations.

Open High Ropes
1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 11
1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 17

Open Climbing Tower

Guided Nature Hikes
Sunday, April 25; Saturday, May 1; and Saturday, May 8. The guided hikes on HFC's trails are open free to the public; all hikes begin at 2 p.m.

Outdoor Skills Seminar
4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 1
Outdoor enthusiasts, campers and hikers will have the opportunity to hone their skills.

HFC is located south of Macomb on China Road. From South Johnson Street (past Macomb High School), turn right on China Road and follow the road one-quarter of a mile to the Horn Field Campus entrance. Parking is permitted on the HFC lot.
