MACOMB, IL - - March is National Athletic Training Month (NATM) and Western Illinois University is taking part in this year's NATM theme, "Sports Safety Is a Team Effort," with activities throughout the month.

"Our athletic training students will be putting a variety of events together to celebrate the month and to help educate the community about the profession of athletic training," Dana Moon, the director of marketing and community relations in the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) at WIU, said. (WIU's kinesiology program is situated in the COEHS.)

On March 5, students from Western's kinesiology program and members of the Athletic Training Student Association (ATSA) met with Macomb Mayor Mick Wisslead at City Hall for the annual Mayor's Proclamation for National Athletic Training Month, Moon said. The students also plan to visit St. Paul's School in Macomb from noon-2:30 Monday, March 29 to teach the elementary students about sport-equipment safety and finish the day off with relay races.

The athletic training education program at Western is hosting a NATM Bowling Fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at Digger's College City Bowl, 123 E. Adams St. in Macomb. The event is open to all kinesiology department students, faculty and staff, along with any friends and family. The cost is $40 for teams of four (includes two hours of unlimited bowling, with shoes); $32 of each team's payment will cover the bowling alley fee, while $8 of each team's registration fee will go as a donation to the Newborns in Need organization. Newborns in Need is a charity organized to take care of sick and needy babies and their families.

Payment is due at the time of registration, and forms and payments can be submitted to Renee Polubinsky in Brophy Hall 220B. Registration and fees are due by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 23; checks can be made payable to "ATSA." For more information, contact Ben Cates at BL-Cates@wiu.edu.
