COEHS Week April 19-23: Grad Research Symposia and Tech Fest Among Events

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) will celebrate the college, its departments, faculty, staff and students during COEHShowcase: COEHS Week 2010 starting Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23 on WIU's Macomb and Quad Cities campuses.

Highlights of the week include the Graduate Research Symposia on the Macomb and QC campuses; Technology Theatre: Tech Fest 2010; a campus presentation with WIU COEHS Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Michael Shonrock; panel discussions about school safety; Latino immigration; and much more. A schedule of events open to the WIU community and public (as specified) is listed below and online at wiu.edu/coehs/showcase.

Monday, April 19
11 a.m. -- "Making Schools Safe: A Multidisciplinary Discussion," Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)/QC 106

This panel discussion is open free to the public; WIU-QC campus participants will be able to engage in the panel discussion via synchronous video conferencing in the WIU-QC building, room 106. Community members and school personnel interested in school safety are encouraged to attend. Faculty members are also encouraged to bring their students to learn more about issues from a variety of disciplines that affect school safety.

5–6 p.m. -- COEHS Graduate Research Symposium, Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)

Tuesday, April 20
9 a.m. -noon -- "Apple's Innovations in Education," Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)

Apple representative Mollie Sterling will present an interactive session for faculty and staff using Apple, Inc. technologies in the classroom. Register for the event via Apple's website at http://edseminars.apple.com/event/2520.

3:30-5:30 p.m. -- WIU-QC Graduate Research Symposium, WIU-QC 102 A/B

Wednesday, April 21
11 a.m.-1 p.m. -- Tech Fest 2010, Horrabin Hall Gym (Macomb) "Technology Theatre: Tech Fest 2010"

Join exhibitors for featured tabletop exhibits of innovative technology applications developed and used by Western Illinois faculty, staff, and students, area-wide businesses, public school districts and community members. See wiu.edu/coehs/TechFest/index.html for more information.

1 p.m. following TechFest 2010
Winners of the COEHS student-organization video contest will be announced, and an Apple iPad prize drawing will follow the keynote address. Information about the student-video competition is available at wiu.edu/coehs/video.html.

Thursday, April 22
10 a.m. --"Latino Immigration – The Two Sides of the Border," WIU-QC 114/Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)

This panel discussion is open free to the public. Faculty members are encouraged to bring students to learn about issues related to Latino immigration. WIU-Macomb campus participants will be able to engage in the panel discussion via synchronous video conferencing in Horrabin Hall, room 1.

1 p.m. -- "I Never Intended to Work with Old People! Lessons Learned from a Panel of Professionals," Horrabin Hall 1 (Macomb)
This panel discussion is open free to the public. Faculty members are encouraged to bring students to learn about possible career paths and working with aging adults.

Friday, April 23
All Day -- Distinguished Alumnus Day: 2010 Recipient Michael Shonrock, Ph.D.

Shonrock is VP for student affairs and enrollment management and associate professor in the College of Education at Texas Tech University.

2 p.m. -- Campus Presentation by Distinguished Alumnus Michael Shonrock, Horrabin Hall 82 (Macomb)/WIU QC B16
Faculty members are encouraged to bring their students to learn more about Shonrock's work with Gallup's Strength Finder and the new Clifton Institute. He will encourage students to recognize and use their strengths to engage in life, both personally and professionally. This presentation is open free to the public; WIU-QC campus participants will be able to engage in the panel discussion via synchronous video conferencing in the WIU-QC building, room B16.
