MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's psychology department will host the 37th Annual ILLOWA Undergraduate Psychology Conference Saturday, April 24 in Waggoner Hall.

Paper presentation sessions will be held from 9-11 a.m. and from 1-2 p.m. on the first floor of Waggoner Hall. Keynote speaker Scott O. Lilienfeld, a psychology professor at Emory University (Atlanta, GA), will present "The PsychoMythology of Everyday Life: The Great Misconceptions and Misunderstandings of Pop Psychology," from 11 a.m.-noon in Waggoner Hall 054.

Student researchers and their faculty mentors are from the following participating universities and colleges: Culver-Stockton College (Canton, MO), Eureka (IL) College, Illinois College (Jacksonvillle); Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington), Knox College (Galesburg, IL), McKendree University (Lebanon, IL), Monmouth (IL) College, St. Ambrose University (Davenport, IA), the University of Iowa and Western Illinois.

There are some 78 research abstracts in total. Western will have 38 student researchers represented, with 33 abstracts. Some students worked on more than one project. The students are working with eight faculty mentors: Professors Kristine Kelly, Eugene Mathis and Valerie Smead; Associate Professors Paige Goodwin, Robert Intrieri and David Lane; and Assistant Professors Melanie Hetzel-Riggin, Scott Hemenover and Sandra McFadden.

"Working with undergraduate student researchers takes resources," said Intrieri, whose teaching and research is in clinical psychology, with special interest in aging. "It's not only essential to give our students the finest laboratory equipment, but it's also important to have a department whose faculty are active in research for those students who want to go on in the field.

"Providing opportunities for undergraduate students to work two or three years in a research lab, as well as offering opportunities to present papers and abstracts at professional conferences, gives our students experience that few other collegiate undergraduates can match," Intrieri added.

ILLOWA was founded in 1973 by WIU professor emeriti James Joyce and Kermit Hoyenga, who, along with Dean Wright of Monmouth College, and Gary Francois of Knox College, established a means by which local colleges and universities could enhance interaction with each other and provide an educational research experience for their students. Western Illinois hosted the first conference in 1974 and has served as host on a four- to five-year rotational basis ever since.

Co-sponsors for the conference include the Psychology Club and Psi Chi. Western's Visiting Lectures Committee and the Council on Student Activities Fund are co-sponsors for keynote speaker Lilienfeld.
