MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's department of recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) and Horn Field Campus are bringing, once again, the beauty of the music from the Hawaiian Islands to Macomb via Ukulele University. The workshop is slated from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 16.

According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the ukulele is of Portuguese origin and was popularized in Hawaii in the 1880s.

RPTA Professor Michael McGowan, who will be teaching the workshop, noted that Ukulele University is designed for those who have no experience with the ukulele and introduces the basics (tuning, basic chords, basic strumming techniques and songs).

In addition to the May 16 Ukulele University workshop, McGowan will offer UKE High, a program designed for high school students interested in learning how to play the ukulele, from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, June 13, also at WIU's Horn Field Campus.

Advanced registration for each Ukulele University workshop is required; interested individuals can register by contacting the RPTA department at (309) 298-2026. The registration fee for each workshop is $5, and ukuleles are provided for the first 11 participants who enroll. If you have your own or can borrow a ukulele, you may also register for the workshops.
