MACOMB, IL -- Judy Yeast, associate director of Western Illinois University's Campus Recreation, and Courtney James, a WIU college student personnel alumna, have been named the recipients of two National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) awards for their dedication to student activities. They were recognized at the NIRSA National Convention in April.

Yeast received the NIRSA Horace Moody Award, which is awarded to professional members who have made contributions to student development by their encouragement, support and performance. One NIRSA professional member from each of the six NIRSA regions may be recognized each year for this award.

Yeast has served as associate director for Campus Recreation since 1997. She joined the recreation staff in 1981, and has also served as assistant director, interim director and associate coordinator. Yeast was a physical education instructor at Western from 1981 to 2006, and also served as Sports Club director from 1992-94 and from 1995-96.

During her tenure at Western, Yeast has been an active member of numerous committees and organizations including Colleges Against Cancer, Recreational Sports Professional Society, National Girls and Women in Sport Day, National Employee Health and Fitness Day, Chairperson, Take Our Daughter to Work Day Committee, Council of Administrative Personnel, Big Pink Volleyball Committee, Live-Free Tobacco Committee and the Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force. She is a member of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association and the Illinois Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.

James received the NIRSA William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award, which recognizes top undergraduate and graduate students who are participants of and/or employed by the department of recreational sports. The award gives NIRSA an opportunity to honor outstanding student leaders who are active participants, employees and/or volunteers at their institutions.

James, who graduated in December 2009, served as graduate assistant in the Office of Student Activities and as an adviser to the University Union Board. She was also house director for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.
