WIU Army ROTC Commissions Seven 2nd Lts.

MACOMB, IL - - Seven Western Illinois University Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets were commissioned second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a May 14 ceremony on Western's campus. Five of the new officers received active duty commissions.

Western's ROTC award-winning program (wiu.edu/ROTC) was established in 1968. The University's military science department has a longstanding tradition of excellence, having been named the recipient of the General Douglas MacArthur Award for the best ROTC battalion in the Midwest in 1994, 2001 and 2002. The Leatherneck Battalion has also been honored as the Best ROTC Battalion in the Brigade in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Individuals who took the Oath of Office of a commissioned officer are listed below by Illinois counties and out of state:

DuPAGE COUNTY
WEST CHICAGO (60285) – Phyllida Terpsicouri Kornoski received her Bachelor of Science degree in political science and a reserve duty commission in the Adjutant General Corps. She will attend the Adjutant General Officer Basic Course at Fort Jackson (SC) and then proceed to her first duty assignment with the Illinois Army National Guard in Macomb. Her mother, Charlene R. Kornoski-Duvall, and retired Navy Capt. Bruce Walker pinned on her gold bars.

LAKE COUNTY
LONG GROVE (60047) – Eric Gregory Huml received his Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and justice administration and a reserve duty commission in the Military Police Corps. He will attend Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood (MO) and them proceed to his first duty assignment with the Illinois Army National Guard in Waukegan. Huml's parents, Lauren and Jeff Huml, pinned on his gold bars.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
LITCHFIELD (62056) – Joshua Richard Zuck received his Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and justice administration and an active duty commission in the Military Intelligence Corps. He will initially serve as cadre at Warrior Forge at Fort Lewis (WA). He then will attend the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Fort Huachuca (AZ) then proceed to his first duty assignment at Fort Riley (KS). Zuch's father, Todd Zuch, his mother, Kristy Zuch, and his brother, Nicholas Zuch, pinned on his gold bars.

OGLE COUNTY
MOUNT MORRIS (61054) – Kelly William Ward received his Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and justice administration and an active duty commission in the Medical Service Corps. He will initially serve as cadre at the Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox (KY). He will attend the Medical Service Officer Basic Course at Fort Sam Houston (TX) and then proceed to Fort Rucker (AL) for Aeromedevac Flight School. Ward's parents, Michael and Jolynn Ward, pinned on his gold bars.

WILL COUNTY
JOLIET (60431) – Gregory David Smith received his Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and justice administration and an active duty commission in the Military Intelligence Corps. He will attend the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Fort Huachuca (AZ), and then proceed to his first duty assignment at Fort Lewis (WA). Smith's parents, Linda Smith and David Smith, pinned on his gold bars.

She will attend Ordnance Officer Basic Course at Fort Lee (VA) and then proceed to her first duty assignment at Fort Campbell (KY). BURLINGTON (50601) – Jeremiah Lee Freitag received his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and an active duty commission in the Medical Service Corps. He will initially serve as cadre at the Leader's Training Crouse at Fort Knox (KY). He will attend the Medical Service Officer Basic Course at Fort Sam Houston (TX) and then proceed to his first duty assignment at Fort Stewart (GA).
