MACOMB, IL -- Spend a Saturday morning this summer strolling around sustainable gardens and viewing a variety of sustainable landscapes at various stages of growth… all for a good cause. The Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens Tour Benefit for Western Illinois University's Horn Field Campus (HFC) is slated for 9 a.m.–noon Saturday, July 24 at seven sites in Macomb.

According to Mindy Pheiffer, Horn Field Campus program coordinator, the tour will provide a sustainable education experience for the community, as well as raise funds to continue environmental education and leadership programs for youth at Horn Field Campus.

"Sustainable gardens and landscapes are important because they help prevent soil and water erosion, are drought and cold resistant and are naturally resistant to many pests and diseases, which can decrease maintenance, labor and expenses," Pheiffer explained. "And for wildlife enthusiasts, native landscaping also provides nesting sites and attracts bees, butterflies and birds."

On this year's tour, local artists will also showcase their artwork in at least two of the garden tour stops. The 2010 Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens Tour stops include:

  • 4 Woodland Lane, Gordon and Pam Rands; artwork by Matt Myers
  • 814 W. Carroll, Kelley Quinn and Vajo Necak; artwork by Kelley Quinn
