Alum to Deliver Sports Participation Comparison (Spain and U.S.) Lecture Oct. 14

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University alumnus Juan Tortosa Martinez will present "Sports Participation in Spain and in the United States: A Comparison" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in the University Union Sandburg Theatre.

Martinez, who completed his master's degree in recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) at WIU in 2002, earned his Ph.D. in education from the University of Alicante (Spain) in 2009. He joined the full-time faculty of the University of Alicante in 2007 as an assistant professor.

Martinez is a visiting scholar with Western's RPTA department and the Center for International Studies. According to Dale Adkins, RPTA department chair, while visiting WIU, Martinez will also be giving classroom presentations. Additionally, he is working on a cross-cultural research project with Dan Yoder, RPTA professor. Adkins noted that Martinez's research focuses on the areas of sports, leisure and play.

Martinez's Oct. 14 presentation is sponsored by the WIU Visiting Scholar Program, RPTA, the sociology and anthropology department, the Center for International Studies, WIU Athletics, Campus Recreation and the sport management graduate program in the kinesiology department at WIU.
