MACOMB, IL -- Holly Garbo, academic adviser at Western Illinois University, will retire December 31, 2010, after having served Western as a staff member for 34 and one-half years. Garbo, who advises students in WIU's recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) department and has been doing so since 1991, began her career at Western in 1976 three months after she received her bachelor's degree in English from WIU. She earned her M.S. in RPTA from WIU in 1990.

Faculty and staff in WIU's RPTA department will host a retirement reception for Garbo from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 in the University Union Lincoln Room. Remarks at the reception are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Garbo's friends and colleagues are invited to attend.

"Holly has been able to provide guidance to RPTA students for nearly 20 years and has been instrumental in the student growth during this period of time," said Dale Adkins, chair of the RPTA department. "Because of her engagement with students, and due to her advising approach and technique, she has been sought out by other students. Her concern and interest in students is a characteristic of her leadership and will always be a model for future advisers within the RPTA department."

During her time as an academic adviser for RPTA, Garbo was honored with WIU's "Outstanding Academic Adviser" award (1997). In 1999, she was selected by the National Academic Advising Association for recognition as an Outstanding Adviser. From 1976-78, Garbo worked in the University housing office, and from 1978-91, she worked in the office of the University ombudsman.
