Panel and Lecture Nov. 9; Revisiting the Midterm Elections

MACOMB, IL – Brian Gaines, an associate professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will join four Western Illinois University faculty members for a 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 panel discussion titled, "A Week After the Wave: Revisiting the 2010 Midterm Elections," which will be held in Morgan Hall 101B.
Western's political science faculty panelists will include Janna Deitz and Jongho Lee, both associate professors, and new faculty member Jonathan Day, an assistant professor whose specialty is in American politics. Dietz teaches American government and politics, the Congress, campaigns and elections, and her research focus is on congressional elections, legislative politics and women in politics. Lee also teaches American government and politics along with research and methods, and he conducts research on public opinion and political psychology.
WIU Political Science Professor Rick Hardy will serve as moderator. Hardy, a constitutional law expert, was a nominee for U.S. Congress in 1992 (from Missouri) and represented Missouri in the 2004 Electoral College.
At 7 p.m. Gaines will give a keynote address on the elections results, also in Morgan Hall 101B.
Gaines' teaching and research interests are in elections and voting, political behavior and public opinion. He has authored three chapters in three books; several articles in professional journals and opinion articles in state newspapers; and an essay, "Elect, Indict, Repeat: Will Democracy, Illinois Style, Ever Change?" about Illinois politics and indicted governors, which appeared in the January 2007 edition of Illinois Issues (http://illinoisissues.uis.edu/features/2007jan/elect.html). Gaines also is an occasional commentator and political analyst for central Illinois media outlets.
