WIU Youth Summer Camps in Filmmaking, Math, Art

MACOMB, IL - - Three academic summer camps will be offered through Western Illinois University – Adventures in Filmmaking, Art for Gifted and Talented Students and Girls Plus Math in June and July for students from fourth grade through high school.
The filmmaking and math camps are offered only to residential students; the art camp is offered to residential students as well as commuter students within 30 miles. Lodging for the filmmaking and math camps is at WIU's Horn Lodge Campus. Art campers will be lodged in one of Western's residence halls, and art classes will be held in Garwood Hall. All campers will be supervised by faculty and specially trained residential counselors. In their free time, campers may enjoy supervised extracurricular activities such as swimming, indoor and outdoor games, movies and bowling.
Art for Gifted and Talented Students (residential fee $425; commuter fee $375) – Two camps are offered; students in grades 4-6 can participate in the June 12-17 camp and students in grades 6-8 can participate in camp from June 19-24. The program is designed to stimulate and challenge students who display talent in art through an intensive week of art study and participation. Participants will be guided by members of WIU's Department of Art faculty, local artists and assistants giving them opportunities to expand their skills and explore new ideas. The camps offer topics ranging from drawing and painting, airbrush, computer art and three-dimensional expression. Enrollment is limited and students must be in, or qualified for, gifted programs at their school or have demonstrated a strong ability in art. A coordinator of their art program, or their primary teacher or art teacher must recommend the student for the program.
Adventures in Filmmaking (residential fee $499) – The camp is held July 10-15 and enrollment is limited to 24 students who have not yet graduated from high school by the program's start date. Professionals in Western's University Television production services have designed the camp to give students a hands-on introduction to the pre-production, production and post-production stages of the filmmaking process. The students will be involved in all aspects of producing a film, from script to screen. Students will participate in developing a story, script breakdown, casting, lighting and shooting. They will receive an introduction to the editing process and will be given a copy of the final cut of the project at the end of the camp. Registered students will have a pre-program opportunity to discuss filmmaking, enhance their skills and interact with the instructors and other participants online. Girls Plus Math (residential fee $449) – This camp, which runs from July 17-22, is offered for girls ages 11-13 and is limited to 24 students. Girls Plus Math is designed to provide a stimulating and supportive environment and to promote interest in mathematics, willingness to take risks in analysis, self-confidence and the motivation needed for effective problem-solving. Guided by WIU math faculty, students will have the opportunity to work in Western's laboratories and computer facilities' using advanced technological resources. In addition, a number of professional women will visit the program to describe how they use math in their work and how they became interested in pursuing their careers. The goal of the program is to do more than teach math; it is intended to demonstrate the relationship of math to different areas of life and to explore math beyond the limitations of the standard curriculum.
Western Illinois University's Non-Credit Programs has been providing youth programs and camps for more than 30 years. Students must be recommended by a teacher or school administrator from their respective school in order to be admitted, and then admission to the summer camps is on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollments are limited and typically fill quickly.
