Award-Winning Journalist to Visit WIU for Journalism Day

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will host Cheryl Corley, a reporter from National Public Radio's Chicago bureau, as the keynote speaker for Spring Journalism Day Thursday, March 31.
The keynote address, "Keeping the 'Public' in Journalism," is scheduled for noon in WIU's University Union Sandburg Theatre. The presentation is open free to the public.
As a national desk reporter, Corley travels throughout the country covering trials, politics, housing, violence and other issues. She has covered topics from the political turmoil involving former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich and the election of President Barack Obama, to hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. One of her stories about designer living in extraordinarily tiny homes on wheels became one of NPR's top emailed stories.
Corley has been honored for her work by various groups, including the Associated Press, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Public Radio News Directors Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. She earned the Community Media Workshop's Studs Terkel Award for Excellence in Reporting on Chicago's diverse communities and a Herman Kogan Award for reporting on immigration issues. According to the NPR website, Corley serves on the board as acting president of the Association for Women Journalists in Chicago and has served as a fill-in host for NPR shows "Tell Me More," the weekend edition of "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition." Corley graduated with honors from Bradley University, and now serves the university as a trustee. While in Peoria, she worked as a reporter and news director for the public radio station WCBU and as a television director for the NBC affiliate WEEK-TV. Before joining NPR in 1995, Corley was a news director at Chicago's WBEZ-FM, where she supervised an award-winning team of reporters.
