MACOMB, IL -- Earlier this month, more than 150 science educators gathered on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus to update their science teaching skills at the 25th Annual PreK-8 Science Update Conference. During the April 15 event hosted by the WIU Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the College of Education and Human Services, WIU alumna Julie Ann Bice was honored with the Maurice G. Kellogg Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.

Bice, who is a teacher at West Prairie Middle School in Colchester (IL), earned her master's degree in elementary education from Western in 2001 and her bachelor's degree from Quincy (IL) University in 1974. Bice is also an adjunct elementary education literacy instructor at Monmouth (IL) College. According to Don Powers, director of the Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center, Bice is known locally for her environmental activities, such as creating butterfly gardens throughout the region.

Powers noted the PreK-8 Science Update Conference offered participating teachers a choice of several sessions, covering topics from butterflies to plants; engineering to mathematics; and forensics science to literature. Participants also had the opportunity to attend mini-sessions, which focused on a variety of topics from bats and soda pop to constructing your own laboratory equipment.
