Summer Science Program for HS Students

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University physics department will offer a special section of college-level calculus-based physics, beginning June 20, to area high school students who are entering their senior year.
The six-week session of Physics 197 will be held from June 20 through July 29, meeting from 9-noon, Monday through Thursday. The course is comprised of lectures, discussion and a laboratory component.
Students must have completed six semesters of high school courses by June 2011, and have completed at least two years of high school algebra (trigonometry is preferable, but not mandatory). According to Physics Department Chair Mark Boley, the course will be comparable to AP high school physics, and will be fast-paced and rigorous.
Individuals interested in enrolling in Physics 197 must complete a WIU application (with $25 fee online) and be accepted with regular freshman admission requirements (an ACT score of 20 and a GPA of 2.5/4.00); and provide a high school transcript to indicate that six semesters of coursework have been completed by summer 2011, and a letter of support from their high school counselor or principal. The estimated cost for the course is $1,156.28 (four credit hours).
After gaining admission to WIU, students will need to send their name and WIU ID number to mfmsb@wiu.edu in order to register. Students who take Physics 197 are eligible to take Physics 198 in Fall 2011 and Physics 200 in Spring 2012.
