MACOMB, IL -- Enroll your fourth grader in culinary classes that will stimulate his or her inner foodie. Or provide a learning opportunity for your eighth graders that will help them figure out fashion and delight in design. Kid University, slated for Monday, June 6-Thursday, June 9 and Monday, June 13-Thursday, June 16, sponsored by the Western Illinois University Department of Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality, offers children in grades four through eight the opportunity to enroll in such sessions, with hands-on courses covering fashion, desserts, culinary skills or computers.

Youngsters can mix and match sessions they enroll in, based on their individual interests (sessions listed below). Cost per session (one session is a two-hour class offered daily, Monday-Thursday, for one week) is $35 or two sessions for $60.

Week 1: June 6-9

8-9:50 a.m. — Fashion Sessions

  • Monday, June 6 — Bead and Button Teacup
    Create an unusual holder for your fashion accessories or just display this uniquely designed teacup in your room.
  • Tuesday, June 7 — Visual Merchandising
    You will have the opportunity to learn the display basics while highlighting your uniquely designed teacup from Monday.
  • Wednesday, June 8 — Color Your Fashion World
    Learn the color wheel! You will learn the importance of color in everyday fashion while painting your own color wheel.
  • Thursday, June 9 — Mannequin Mania
    Learn how to style mannequins. You will get to dress and drape mannequins to highlight your style.

8-9:50 a.m. — Culinary Sessions

  • Monday, June 6 — You Can Grow That?
    Learn about some veggies you already know and some you may have never heard of. We'll learn how to chop 'em, dice 'em and cook 'em.
  • Tuesday, June 7 — World Food Adventure
    Now let's take those veggies we prepared yesterday and start our around-the-world food adventure. We're heading to Asia and making a scrumptious stir-fry and fried rice.
  • Wednesday, June 8 — Tutti Frutti
    Some sweet-sounding and not-so-sweet-sounding fruits. How about ugli fruit? star fruit? We'll test your eyes and your taste buds with these unique fruits.
  • Thursday, June 9 — Happy Trails
    Let's make some healthy snacks with those fruits. We'll make some dips and get ready to "go West" with some tasty trail mix and fruit salsa with cinnamon chips.

10 a.m.-noon — Desserts Sessions

  • Monday, June 6 — Monster Cookies
    Create delicious monster cookies and then go a step further by making them into ice cream sandwiches.
  • Tuesday, June 7 — Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
    Learn how to create dazzling chocolate-covered strawberries that look almost too good to eat!
  • Wednesday, June 8 — Raspberry Cheesecake Cupcakes
    These fabulous treats are almost as fun to make as they are to eat.
  • Thursday, June 9 — Chocolate Mousse
    Make a light and fluffy mousse with Oreo cookies. This one is big on flavor!

10 a.m.-noon — Computers Sessions

  • Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7 — Math Games
    Learn number skills in a fun way by using graphics and games.
  • Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9 — Writing Skills
    Learn to express yourself! Strengthen your vocabulary, understand those words and express yourself in a fun way, without all the pressure or stress!

Week 2: June 13-16

8-9:50 a.m. — Fashion Sessions

  • Monday, June 13 — Tie-Dyeing
    Get psychedelic with a fashion classic. We will tie-dye your own t-shirts to keep. The colorful patterns you can create are never out of style.
  • Tuesday, June 14 — Visual Merchandising
    You will have the opportunity to expand your display talents while showcasing your tie-dye designs.
  • Wednesday, June 15 — What Is Your Personal Style?
    Create a fashion collage. You will develop your own collage and discuss your style with your fellow fashionistas.
  • Thursday, June 16 — It's a Textile World
    Let's learn the differences between textiles. We will experiment in the textile lab to learn the differences in fibers.

8-9:50 a.m. — Culinary Sessions

  • Monday, June 13 — Gotta Love Those Carbs
    Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. Learn to load your plate with the right portion sizes. You will explore different carbs, such as pasta with sauce, toast topped with tomatoes and more!
  • Tuesday, June 14 — Hola, Mexico
    Now let's go south of the border to Mexico and learn to spice up those carbs. We'll make salsa and chips, nachos and quesadillas — heat optional!
  • Wednesday, June 15 — Got Milk?
    We do and we're going try it in lots of forms. What's the real difference among skim, two percent and whole milk? How about some great cheeses? We will finish the day with homemade ice cream!
  • Thursday, June 16 — Viva Italia
    Fasten your seat belt, we're off to Italy. What was your favorite cheese from yesterday? Use it to create your own pizza and ravioli.

10 a.m.-noon — Desserts Sessions

  • Monday, June 13 — Tie-Dye Cupcakes
    Get psychedelic by making cupcakes that are out of this world! We will tie-dye the cupcake batter and icing to make one-of-a-kind cupcakes. The colorful patterns you can create are endless!
  • Tuesday, June 14 — Apple Crisp
    This is a classic dessert that is even better than grandma makes! Top it with ice cream for an extra special touch.
  • Wednesday, June 15 — Chocolate Layer Torte
    This is a show-stopping dessert… layers of chocolate cake and whipped cream topped with chocolate curls! Your family will ask for this cake again and again.
  • Thursday, June 16 — Fruit Pizza
    A simple dessert that is so colorful and delicious it will be hard to keep around for very long!

10 a.m.-noon — Computers Sessions

  • Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14 — Social Studies Games
    Our nation's history and geography + gaming = FUN learning!
  • Wednesday, June 15 — It's a Snap!
    Have digital pictures of you and your friends that you want to share? In this class you will learn how to download, edit and share your pictures with the world!
  • Thursday, June 16 — Free Educational Games
    You will learn the sites of many games that are free and [whisper] educational!
