MACOMB, IL - -Joanne Pascale, a research social science analyst at the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C., will present "Social Science Research at the U.S. Census Bureau: Where We've Been and Where We're Going," at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Morgan Hall 109.

Her presentation will provide a general overview of how the Census Bureau is organized and the data products it puts out; the type of research done; the work of the geography division; and the challenges to the field and new directions and opportunities for cutting-edge research. She will also discuss her research projects as well as career opportunities for students at the Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau takes data from the census of the U.S. population and determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives to distribute federal funds to local communities. The Bureau also carries out surveys and data collection operations every year that measure and inform society, producing the annual poverty rate and other indicators.

Pascale's work involves a variety of hot topics including health care insurance and survey methods. Her published works include: "Assessing Measurement Error in Health Insurance Reporting: A Qualitative Study of the Current Population Survey" (Inquiry Journal 45(5), Winter 2008/2009 pp 422-437) and "Survey Methodology for Public Health Researchers: Selected Readings from 20 years of Public Opinion Quarterly" (with Marc Roemer and Dean Resnick, Public Opinion Quarterly, 2009 73: pp 497-520).

She previously worked for the National Centre of Social Research in London and Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, NJ. Pascale earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Delaware and earned her master's degree at the University of Michigan.
